Prayer & Distractions

Lately I’ve been distracted while praying. Sometimes I think of regretful and embarrassing moments from ten years ago. Other times I daydream about my agenda or life goals. Both cases are a distraction and makes me feel terrible for letting it happen while praying.

I was fellowshipping with a brother yesterday and without knowing about my problem, he mentioned something that cured me of remaining distracted. His simple message was instead of feeling guilty for sins and decisions you’ve already been forgiven for, forget it. Instead of apologizing to God, forget it. It’s Satan who brought you to your fallen nature. It’s Satan who’s bringing it up in your mind while you pray. There’s no reason to apologize on behalf of Satan.

It struck me for one, I realized my distractions and didn’t know how to deal with them; two, this message was delivered after much apologizing to the Lord about this problem. Now I simply let the thoughts go as freely as they came. There’s no need to wrestle, apologize, or identify with them. I’ve already confessed my disobedience. My spirit stands on the side of God, not the self. It’s not our regret and sorrow that obtains forgiveness for us, but our turning to the Lord.

1 John 1:6-9 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth; But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from every sin. If we say that we do not have sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
